About Us

More Than a Showground - A Heartbeat of the Community
For over a century, Oswestry Showground has stood as a proud symbol of Shropshire’s rural life - a place where community, agriculture and celebration come together. Nestled on the edge of Oswestry town, the showground plays host to a wide range of events throughout the year, from bustling antique and collectors fairs to dog shows, vintage rallies, equestrian events and private hire gatherings like weddings and charity balls.
But it is best known as the home of the Oswestry Show, one of the largest and longest-running one-day agricultural shows in the UK. Held annually on the first Saturday of August, the Oswestry Show welcomes over 15,000 visitors, hundreds of exhibitors, and more than 120 trade stands. It's a true celebration of rural life - showcasing livestock, machinery, local crafts, horticulture, and family entertainment, all while upholding the values and traditions of the agricultural community.
Rooted in 1862 - A Legacy of Farming, Fellowship & Forward Thinking
The Oswestry & District Agricultural Society held its very first show on Friday 3rd October 1862 at the Smithfield Cattle Market - an ambitious idea brought to life by a determined community of farmers, landowners, and supporters of rural life. At a time when other local societies were failing due to internal disputes, Oswestry rallied behind a Worcestershire man, Mr H. M. Aldham, who, alongside John Ralph Ormsby Gore, laid the groundwork for a society that would stand the test of time.
The aim of the Society was clear: to improve farming standards, showcase the latest machinery, promote better livestock and produce and uplift the lives of agricultural labourers. The first show was a resounding success, drawing large crowds, awarding prize money, and offering a rare chance for local farmers to gather, share ideas, and compete in friendly rivalry.
Thanks to the support of the public, the railways, and an ever-growing list of members and patrons, the Oswestry Show flourished. From a modest gathering in a town cattle market to the expansive and vibrant event it is today, the showground remains rooted in the values of community, innovation, and rural pride. Now in its 138th year, the Oswestry Show continues to honour the legacy of its founders and the enduring spirit of the countryside.
